Week 2

Tezuka For this week I read Phoenix issue 1 Dawn. Overall the whole manga was very whimsical, and I'm a total sucker for the nostalgic retro anime style that is both used in Astro Boy and Phonenix. It livens up the pages so much, and does give off an early mickey mouse vibe too. Another thing about the style is that I always thought limbs that widen towards the end was more of a contemporary choice of the 2000's to 2010's. But seeing it drawn out in Phoenix proves otherwise.  Nagi's proportions in this scene (girl looming over her sister) are awkward, but still cute nonetheless. I as loved Nagi's spunk, she doesn't take any smack from anyone. (Still talking about style here) I loved how Tezuka used crosshatching for texture and flow in panels as well. The use of crosshatching, dotted lines, negative space, it all really shows how he can make the environment dynamic against the simplistic blocky characters.

Week 8

I absolutely loved My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness. I read it at the library, back when we still had access to it. I really related to the way that the author spoke about depression and hopelessness. This one line really touched me, "It felt good to fall apart". Sometimes when you're so far down the rabbit hole of mental illness, you find comfort in the emotions you feel constantly. Happiness becomes foreign. But let's not just focus on the mental illness aspect of it. MLEWL really did a good job at portraying the main character's struggle with their sexual identity, and how their parents may react negatively towards it. Granted having a whole story about enlisting a escort in a love hotel may be one of the more brash ways to tell the world that you're a lesbian but hey life isn't perfect. Week 12

To be a bully. For this week I read "A Silent Voice". I really liked this piece because it did a good job exploring the mind of a childhood bully. I think all to often people will just assume bullies are cruel just to be cruel. But in reality they're hurting on the inside and they decide to take out their frustration on people weaker than them. I've had my fair share of bullies in the past and that usually ended up being the case. On the one hand I sympathize for ishida because I feel like he get pigeon holed into the role of the misfit and rough boy. Its hard to change your ways when everyone expects you to be nothing more than a roughhousing little brat, especially when you're so young. Even his own teacher expects nothing out of ishida than to be a bully. Which really sucks, people can change ways and to treat them like a villain forever won't do anyone good. Forgive, move on, and heal. Bullies don't usually stay a bully forever. My childhood bully ...
